1) SIN
Sin would be assumed by anyone as "doing wrong". But in the Bible, it is stressed more like "not doing right". Not only doing wrong, but sin of Adam, of our ancestors, not bearing good fruits, unbelief or ignoring Gods expectations also makes us sinners.
A - Sin by actions offending to God
Rom 1:23 - Do not depict God as an image of corruptible man, birds and animals. 24 uncleanness, lusts 29 unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who after knowing God, practice such things deserve death, also ones who approve of them. (Rom 2:8)
Gal 5:19 the works of the flesh : adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries 26 conceited, provoking
1 Cor 6:9 the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God
B - Sins thru Adam
Psa 51:5 I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
Rom 5:12 through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned 16 the judgment came from one offense resulted in condemnation 17 by one man’s offense death reigned
1 Cor 15:22 as in Adam all die (in Christ all shall be made alive)
C - Sins thru Ancestors
Exo 20:5 I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations
2 Kings 5 Elisha curses Gehazi and his descendants forever with leprosy
Mat 23:31 Jesus: you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of sinners. 32 How can you escape the condemnation of hell? 36 all these things will come upon this generation
Mat 27:25 all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children." (Thus asking for the curse).
D - Sins of Not bearing good fruits
The Bible clearly states that if we do not bear good fruits we will be punished.
It does not talk about bearing bad fruits which is out of the question and undoubtedly sin.
The bad fruit was eaten by Adam & Eve. The bible now talks about bearing good fruits.
Jesus himself cursed a tree which didnt bear fruit.
Similarly we are like a tree, Jesus will examine us and condemn us if we do not have any fruits.
Mat 3:10/7:19/John 15:2 Every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire*
Mat 25:29 Who does not have will be cast into darkness
Mat 21:19 And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, Let no fruit grow on you ever again. Immediately the fig tree withered away
E - Sins of Unbelief
John 8:24 You will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins
Heb 3:17 Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 they would not enter His rest, those who did not obey? 19 because of unbelief.
Heb 4:6 some did not enter rest because of disobedience, 11 Let us be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall of disobedience.
Sin is also defined as knowing good yet not doing, it doesnt have to talk about doing bad which once again is undebatably a sin. Also we must follow the Full Gospel. We can conclude that we all are sinners and if we do not agree to that, we make Jesus a liar.
James 4:17 To know to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin
James 2:10 Whoever shall keep the whole law, yet stumble in one point, is guilty of all
Rom 3:10 There is none righteous, or understands; or seeks God. or profitable; or does good.
Rom 3:23 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 10 we make Jesus a liar, and His word is not in us
CONCLUSION:- We are all sinners
2) DEATH
-----------------------------------------
When we sin we become slaves to sin and finally it takes total control over us and we do not know what we are doing.
John 8:34 Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin
Rom 7:20 if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me (VS Gal 2:20)
We are all sinners not any different from others, so do we need to worry about that. Yes ! Because the Bible says that sin results in death.
Rom 6:23 The wages of sin is death
Rom 5:21 sin reigned in death*
1 Cor 15:56 The sting of death is sin
CONCLUSION:- We are all sinners, which leads all of us to death.
3) PAYING THE PRICE WITH BLOOD & SACRIFICE
-----------------------------------------------------
We need to overcome sin and pay a price for our sins. In todays world, people cant come to terms with this, but it does makes sense because there needs to be an 'accountability'. If we could get away from sin without paying a price, then there would be no accountability, fear or regret.
In the old testament God asked people to pay the price thru sacrifice and shedding of blood of a spotless lamb/sheep/bull by shedding its blood for our sins.
Lev 11:11 The life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.
Heb 9:22 Almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
Below are 3 instances of sacrifices in the old testament followed by the ultimate sacrifice in the next section.
All these sacrifices of Abel, Abraham and Aron/Moses point to the final one. So God was preparing us with these examples.
Gen 4:4 ABEL brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering (comp Col 1:15-19/Heb 1:6)
Gen 22 (ABRAHAM is ready to obey God to Sacrifice his son. He says God will provide a lamb. Abraham offered a burnt offering instead of his son.)
Exo 12:2/ Num 9:12 (ARON/MOSES Observe the passover) In the first month of the year;
3 every man shall take for himself a lamb
5 without blemish, a male of the first year.
6 Then the whole assembly of Israel shall kill it at twilight.
7 put some of the blood on the doorposts.
8 they shall eat the flesh that night
9 Dont eat it raw, nor boiled, but roasted in fire its head with its legs and its entrails.
10 You shall let none of it remain until morning
13 when I see the blood, the plague shall not be on you.
46 not carry any of the flesh outside the house, nor shall you break one of its bones.
Num 29:20 On the third day present 11 bulls, 2 rams, 14 lambs in their FIRST YEAR without blemish
Lev 7:17 the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day must be burned with fire. 19:6 It shall be eaten the same day you offer it, And if any remains until the third day, it shall be burned in the fire.
As you can see all sacrifices are directed toward Christ. Abel sacrifices were firstborn. Yet since the animal sacrifice was not enough to erase the parents sins, his blood was shed. If it was his brothers, it wouldnt have been without blemish. Abraham claims God will provide a Lamb, however a Ram was sacrificed. Abraham is the father of Nations. So Issac is the nation and the nation had to be sacrificed, instead a Lamb of Jesus took the place of the sacrifice of our blood. The passover sacrifice points to Jesus in each aspect, without blemish, bones not broken, at twilight, none shall remain until morning, of the first year, sacrifice after 3 days, after 3 days it must be burned and there must not be any flesh remaining.
There is a problem with these 3 types of sacrifice here. It says "Almost" all things are purified by blood, not "all" (Heb 9:22). Initially people would break down as they saw an animal paying the price for their sin. The pain and the blood was unbearable and this would make them regreat and avoid sin. But over a period of time it became a ritual where people just bought the animal at the temple and paid for it and never saw the animal being sacrificed. So this sacrifice lost its meaning expecially since these were small animal sacrifices to pay for the big sins that we commit.
Heb 10:2 If the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 4 It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
CONCLUSION:- There is no remission of sins without shedding of blood but blood of animals will not suffice for the sins over generations.
4) JESUS IS THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE & REDEMPTION FROM SIN
----------------------------------------------------------------
But God had promised to take away our sins:-
Rom 11:26 all Israel will be saved, "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;" 27 this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.
1 John 2:25 This is the promise that He has promised us - eternal life.
As per Gods Promise, thru the blood of Jesus we are saved from death and sin. Jesus Himself declares this during the last supper:-
John 17:2 He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
Act 4:12 No salvation in any other (than Jesus), there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Rom 3:25 Him God set forth as a propitiation by His blood.
Rom 5:9 Justified by His blood, we shall be saved.
Rom 6:23 the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Heb 1:3 He had by Himself purged our sins
Heb 2:17 He had to be made like His brethren, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
John 1:29 Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"
Mat 1:21 He will save His people from their sins.
Mat 26:28 My blood of the new covenant, is shed for many for remission of sins.(1Cor 11:25/Heb 12:24)
Eph 1:7/Col 1:14 in Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
1 John 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins, also for the whole world.
The lamb sacrifice of the passover and old testament leads and prepars us to Jesus the first born (Col 1:15/Heb 1:6). Who came to save and neither to condemn (John 3:17) nor judge (John 12:47):-
1 Pet 1:18 you were not redeemed with corruptible things, from tradition/ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot
Heb 12:24 Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood that speaks better than that of Abel.
1 Cor 5:7b For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
CONCLUSION:- Only thru the blood of Jesus we are saved from sin and death.
5) REPENTANCE
----------------------------------------------
Our God is a mercifull and forgiving God. If we really repent for our sins and ask for forgiveness, He will forgive us.
Repentance is a process of understanding the heaviness of sin in our lives, regretting for these sins and asking God to forgive us. Repentence is one of the first and most important steps to salvation. The very first teachings by John the Baptist and Jesus are about repentance. It is clear that God wants us to repent and not perish.
Mat 3:2 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand 8 bear fruits worthy of repentance
Mat 4:17 Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Act 2:38 Peter said "Repent, every one be baptized...and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
2 Chro 7:14 If My people humble themselves, pray and seek Me, "turn from their wicked ways", then I will hear and forgive their sin.
Mat 11:20 He began to rebuke the cities, because they did not repent:
Acts 3:19 Repent and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out
Acts 17:30 God now commands all men everywhere to repent
Acts 26:20 they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.
2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise...not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
Rev 2:25 Remember from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place unless you repent
CONCLUSION:- Our first step to being saved is to admit of our sins and repent.
6) BELIEVERS
-------------------------------------------------
To believe in God/anyone, we must know God/them. To know and believe God, we must obey His commandments (1 John 2:3). A Believer is one who believes in all the teachings of Christ. Jesus died for all the sinners (1 John 2:2) and thus we are saved (Acts 16:31) but only if we believe in Him. John 3:16 states that we will attain everlasting life only if we beleive in Him (His teachings). Beleiving involves knowing, accepting, practicing, enduring and propogating the Word of God.
Some say they believe in gosts, which means that they dont worship it but accepts its existance. Similarly, some say they believe in Jesus since they accept the fact that He did exist and is for real. Lets not equate Jesus with the gosts. This is not beleiving and he is not a believer who believes in vain.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever BELIEVES in Him should not perish but have everlasting life
Rom 1:16 Gospel of Christ is the power of God to salvation for (only) everyone who BELIEVES
Acts 16:31 BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved
1 Cor 15:1 I "preached" the gospel, which you "received" and in which you "stand", 2 by which also you are "saved", if you "hold fast" that word, unless you BELIEVED IN VAIN.
If we do not beleive Jesus, we will die to sins (John 8:24). Many died in the wilderness without reaching the rest because of unbelief and disobedience (Heb 3:12-17/4:6,11). (Read section E on the first Part #1 on SIN or click )
CONCLUSION:- Believers must not only Believe that he was the firstborn, died for our sins and rose, but also accept, practice, endure and propogate the Gospel.
7) BEING SAVED
---------------------------------------------------
A person is said to be saved from a situation of danger or death. In the Biblical context, being saved is related to attaining salvation. We are all sinners and condemned to death. We can be saved from this bondage of sin and death only thru Jeus. This means we need to confess our sins, repent, beleive that Jesus came to die for our sins, decide to come out of the old sinfull nature, practice & propogate the Gospel till the end.
(A) Godly Knowledge - First and foremost, we need to know about sin, redemption, sacrifice and salvation thru the teachings of the Jesus and the Word of God.
Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be SAVED.
Rom 5:9 Having been justified by His blood, we shall be SAVED from wrath through Him. (Eph 1:7/Col1:14)
(B) Believe - in Jesus, not in the authenticity of his presence on earth but also believe in his teachings and in the Gospel. Lets not believe in vain.
Acts 16:31 Believe Lord Jesus Christ, and you and your household will be SAVED.
1 Cor 15:1 The gospel you "received" and in which you "stand", 2 by which also you are SAVED, if you "hold fast" that word which I preached to you unless you believed in vain.
(C) Confess - both that Jesus is Lord and that he came in the flesh.
Rom 10:9 Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, and you will be SAVED.
Phil 2:10 At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
1 John 4:2 Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
(D) Call - upon the Lord and you will be SAVED. (Act 2:21/Rom 10:13)
Many people assume that just by calling God like we would call our servant he will turn up anytime, no matter what we do. This is the interpretation of the lazy nominal traditional (supposed to be) christian.
David called upon the Lord in pain when his life was under threat from the enemy, he called the Lord with tears, prayers and worship.
2 Sam 22:4 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be SAVED from my enemies. (Psalms 18:3/116:4)
Abraham & Issac built altars before they called upon the Lord. Similarly we have to build our body as an altar and a living sacrifice to the Lord and call upon his name (Rom 12:1).
Gen 12:8/13:4/21:33/26:25 He built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.
Here we see instances where people called Jesus but he said he never knew them. In Act 19:13 unbelievers try to deliver using the name of Jesus and are attacked by those spirits.
Mat 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven...And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you
Mat 25:11 the other virgins called, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered, ‘I do not know you.’
(E) Enter the Door - who is Jesus and you will be SAVED. But not always will we be saved if we enter an open door. The door may not even open even after we knock on it if we are not worthy of it.
John 10:9 Im the door those who enter by me will be SAVED.
Mat 22:12 All are invited to the wedding of the Kings son, but an intruder who was not prepared is punished eventhough he was invited thru an open door.
Mat 25 By the time the foolish virgins arrive at the door it is closed. And when they call at the door they are not let in.
(F) Baptized - and be SAVED. He who believes and is baptized will be SAVED; but he who does not believe will be condemned (Mar 16:16). Unless you are born again thru water & spirit you will not enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:3)
The Israelites were totally SAVED from the Egyptians who got destroyed only after the Israelites were baptised in the sea.(1 Cor 10:2)
1 Pet 3:21 There is also an antitype which now SAVES us - BAPTISM (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(G) Endure to the end and you shall be SAVED. - Mat 24:13
Heb 3:18 those who did not obey would not enter His rest because of unbelief.
Heb 4:6 those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience 11 Let us be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
(H) By Grace - you have been SAVED; 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. - Eph 2:5
CONCLUSION:- We can be saved after knwoing God, Believing Him, Confessing to Him, Calling out to Him, Entering His door, being Baptized and enduring till the end, overall thru His Grace.
8) BORN AGAIN
-------------------------------------------------
A person is born-again after he:-
1) realizes his sin too heavy for him to bear and repents for it.
2) he admits he is a sinner and confesses his sins to the only God and not to some man or idol or Mary.
3) he asks God for forgiveness
4) he accepts that the price of his sin can only be washed away by the sacrifice of Jesus and accepts Jesus as the messiah and savior
5) he promises never to sin again and gives his life to Jesus and tries to be a new-better person.
6) he takes water baptism and beleives in the baptism of the holy spirit, which guides him away from sin
He is born again as a new person and his old sinfullness has died with the sacrifice of Jesus.
All christians must accepts all point. However #6 is the reason where churches debate.
To be "Born again" is a "spiritual rebirth" by letting our sinfull past die thru the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and giving our life to him thus attaining salvation.
Our spirit is dead to sins we commit.
But when we repent and turn away form sin asking forgivness and give our lives over to Jesus Christ inviting Him to enter our heart, He enters our heart with the Holy Spirit and gives us a good spirit and nature, one that is not compelled toward sin and we become Born Again.
John 1:12-13 As many as received Him, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 3:3-6 Jesus said, unless one is born again, born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. You must be born again.
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
Gal 1:15 Here Paul feels that before he met Jesus he was unborn and still in his mothers womb.
The Book of 1 John talks about being born again repeatedly.
1 John 2:29 everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him
3:9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin...because he is born of God
4:7 everyone who loves is born of God and knows God
5:1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; 4 whatever is born of God overcomes the world; 18 one born of God keeps himself and the wicked does not touch him
OLD vs NEW
The oldness in us needs to die. You cannot be born again, if you died before, you cannot be burried if you have died to your sins.
Eph 4:22 put off your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness
Col 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him
Rom 6:4 We were buried with Jesus thru baptism into death. Just like Jesus rose from the dead, we must walk in newness of life.
Rom 12:2 Let be transformed by the renewing of mind. (Eph 4:23/Rom 7:20 vs Gal 2:20)
2 Cor 4:16/ 5:17 Any man in Christ, is a new creature: old things are passed away; all things become new.
John 12:24 unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain
1 Cor 15:36 what you sow is not made alive unless it dies
42 in is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption
1 Cor 5:7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. (Gal 5:9)
13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore put away from yourselves the evil person.
CONCLUSION:- We must be born again after dieing to the oldness and being renewed in spirit as a new person in and thru Christ.
9) WATER BAPTISM
-------------------------------------------------
Water Baptism is an outward expression and decision for an inward change. It represent cleansing of impurities and comming out clean. It is like an engagement or marriage ceremony which is an outward expression or commitment to be bridgegrooms for Christ. But after that Jesus baptises with the Holy Spirit. We all know Jesus took water Baptism. Even John the Baptist felt unworthy to Baptise Jesus. Was it needed for him? Because we need to be Christlike, He also came to show us how we need to be and what we need to do and Baptism was one of his main teaching.
Mat 3:6 people were baptized, confessing their sins; 11 John: I baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me ...shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and fire. 14 John said, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 16 Jesus was "Baptized" out of the "Water".
John 3:3 Except a man be born again... 5 of "Water" "and" Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Note that he says we need to be baptised in Water. It also says "and Spirit". Most Christians skip/ignore this part which is more important.
The below verses talk about water baptism in specific:-
Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved
Mat 28:19 Go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:38 Repent, be BAPTISED and be filled in the holy spirit (here it talks of both the baptisms separately.
1 John 5:8 There are 3 that bear witness on earth; spirit, water and blood and these 3 are one.
1 Pet 3:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us BAPTISM (not the removal of the filth of the flesh,
but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Act 10:47. Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we.
Act 8:36 the eunuch said, See, water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?...I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38. and they went down both into the water, and he baptized him.
This shows that not only did Jesus stress on Water baptism to enter Heaven, John also stressed on it. And even after Jesus was crusified and rose, his disciples then and today follow & beleive in baptism. So we must be baptized, if we are his followers. Also note that after Baptism we need to be a new person (Gal 3:27/ Col 2:12/ Rom 6:3 )
CONCLUSION:- Water Baptism is a must and that is why Christ demonstrated it eventhough he did not need it.
Heb 6:1 Let us LEAVE the discussion of the BASIC PRINCIPLES of Christ and let us go on to PERFECTION, not laying again
the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of BAPTISMS, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
10) HOLY SPIRIT
-------------------------------------------------
Holy Spirit is part of the Triune God (Father, Son & Holy Spirit). Salvation is not a one time process. Once we enter salvation and get saved we need to endure till the end. We cannot do thos on our own for we are week. It is only thru the Holy spirit that was sent from God, that guides us thru life that we can flee from sin. Click here to know more about Holy Spirit
Mat 24:13 Endure to the end and you shall be saved.
Zech 4:6 Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, Says the LORD
Jesus gives a good definition for the Holy Spirit, calling Him the HELPER and SPIRITofTRUTH, who will DWELL WITH/IN US, TESTIFY OF WORD OF GOD, TEACH, REMIND and GUIDE US.
John 14:17 the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He DWELLS WITH YOU AND BE IN YOU. (1 Cor 3:16)
John 14:26 But the HELPER, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will TEACH you all things, and REMIND YOU my teachings
John 15:26 But when the HELPER comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will TESTIFY OF ME (1 Cor 12:3)
John 16:13 when He, the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, has come, He will GUIDE you into all truth; and He will TELL you things to come
CONCLUSION:- We need the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit to endure till the end.
