PROMISE OF ABRAHAM
Are we (South Asians/ Gentiles) descendents of Abraham ?
Do we receive the promise thru Abraham or is it for Jews (thru Issac) and Arabs (thru Ishmael) ?
Let us see what is the blessing and promise made to Abraham and who are his descendents who receive it.
OLD TESTAMENT - ABRAHAMs BLESSINGS
God blessed Abraham as the father of nations in whose seed all the nations shall be blessed,
GEN 12:2 I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
15:5 "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them. So shall your descendants be."
17:1 the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly." 3 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.
22:17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.
26:4 And I will make your descendants multiplyy as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; 5 because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws."
28:14 Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
NEW TESTAMENT - PROMISE TO ABRAHAM
Only by Faith and not thru works/law/flesh we can receive the Promise of God and are set free from bondage and become children of God.
To Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ. (Gal 3:16)
HEB 11 - Only by Faith
8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;
10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18 of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called",
19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.
GAL 3 - we can receive the Promise
6 just as Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." 7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed." 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.
11 that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."
14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ.
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
GAL 4 - and are set free
22 Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,
28 Now we, as Isaac was, are children of promise. 29 But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.
ROM 4 - not thru works/law/flesh
1 Abraham our father was not justified by works/flesh
5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,
9 For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. 10 Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised.
13 For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.
16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness."
ROM 9 - and become children of God
6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, 7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, "In Isaac your seed shall be called." 8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed."
CONCLUSION-
Apart from the descendants of Issac (Jews) and Ishmael (Arabs) we as believers of Christ are also children of Abraham :-
1) not thru physical blood relation from Abraham but thru spiritual blood from Christ shed for us who beleive.
2) not thru his physical seed but by the spiritual seed that is Jesus Christ.
3) not thru the works of law (Islam & Judaism) justified by flesh but thru Grace and Faith justified by the spirit.
God speaks to Abraham that his descendents will be like sand of the sea, dust of the air and stars of the sky. The Jews are like sand which are cleaned and washed by the law,
the arabs are like the dust of the air but much later in the night comes into visibility the stars who are followers of Christ that come into being after going thru darkness in life,
but thru faith in Christ are visible and reflect the light of the ultimate light of Christ.
Sacrifice of Issac
Abraham is the "father of nations" and also the "father of Issac". Here Abraham is the father and Issac represents the nations. This means that God was supposed to
take the life of the entire nations due to their sin as a sacrifice. But instead of that a Lamb was supposed to be substituted as Abraham suggested that God would provide.
The Lamb is Jesus. However there was no Lamb, it was a ram in the bushes that was sacrificed, the true Lamb came later, who is Jesus. The seed of Abraham, Issac & Jacob
thru whom we partake in the Promise of everlasting life.
