What are the fruits of the Holy Spirit ? 12) What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit ? 1) TRINITY & TRIUNE GOD ----------------------------------------- One of the most important part of being a Christian is to really know God. Our God is a triune God, of Father, Son & Holy Spirit. In the beginning, God refers to himself as US and OUR, He is refering to the Trinity:- Gen 1:26 God said, "Let US make man in OUR image, in our likeness... Gen 3:22 God said, "The man has now become like one of US... The Bible says that God is a Triune God. Note that there is just one Holy Spirit:- 1 John 5:7 There are 3 that bear witness in heaven: Father, Word and Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 1 Cor 12:4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 13 By one Spirit we were all baptized ... we drink into one Spirit. IMPORTANCE ------------------------ Jesus in his 2 most important commandments talks about the Holy Spirit. He also gives importance to it in (Matt 12:31) Matt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. John 3:5-6 unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Matt 12:32 whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, in this age or the age to come. So we need to know about the Holy Spirit who teaches us about God and brought us to Christ. It is only thru the Holy Spirit can we really know Christ, who will Testify about Him (John 15:26). 1 Cor 12:3 No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 2) SPIRIT From GOD (Spirit of God & Holy Spirit) ------------------------------------------------------------;--------------------- The word Spirit refers to many things. It can be defined as something that can take control of us. Today many are being filled with the wrong spirit, but Jesus talks about drinking into another spirit. Eph 5:18 do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation (waste, misues, diversion) but be filled with the Spirit John 7:37 Jesus said, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 39 (concerning the Spirit) 1 Cor 12:13 we drink into one Spirit. "HOLY SPIRIT" in the new testament and "SPIRIT of GOD" in the old testament are the same. In the old testament only great Prophets and Men of God were blessed with the SpiritofGod and it also gave physical strength to fight battles at a time when the people never got the Gospel. In the new testament after Jesus was glorified, it was available to all worthy children of God to fight a different battle against the prince of darkness. The old testament talks about the Holy Spirit given to all in the last days:- Joel 2:28/Acts 2:17 In the last days, (God) I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18: And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. 3) SPIRIT OF GOD ------------------------------------------ Holy Spirit was given only after Jesus "TO ALL". That does not mean that He was never given before that. John 7:39 the Holy Spirit was not yet given (to all), because Jesus was not yet glorified. It does mention in many verses that its the same Spirit in both the testaments:- Acts 11:15 as Peter began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. Mark 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Spirit. Let us look at some of the references in the Old Testament:- Genesis 1:2 the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Genesis 41:38 (JOSEPH) Pharaoh said 'Can we find such a one as this man in whom is the Spirit of God?' Numbers 11:25/26/29 (MOSES) the LORD took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again Numbers 27:18 (JOSHUA) LORD to Moses: Take Joshua with you, a man in whom is the Spirit Judges 6:34 (GIDEON) the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet Judges 14:6 / 14:19 / 15:14 (SAMSON) Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart...killed 30 of their men... broke his bonds loose & killed 1000 1 Sam 10:6 (SAUL) Samuel to Saul: the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you, and you will prophesy and be turned into another man. 10: the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied 1 Sam 16:13 (DAVID) Samuel anointed him and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David Daniel 5:14 (DANIEL) I have heard that the Spirit of God is in you; light & understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 4) HOLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF JESUS ---------------------------------------------- Let us look at some of the influence of the Holy Spirit in the time of Jesus on earth, being involved in His birth, baptism, test, ministry, miracles and vision:- Isaiah 48:16 from the beginning; I (Jesus?) was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have sent Me. Matt 1:18/20 Mary was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Matt 3:11 John: He (Jesus) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 16 He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. Matt 4:1 Jesus was LED UP BY the Spirit to the wilderness...(Ref Rom 8:14) Acts 10:38 God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and with power, to do good and heal-oppressed by devil Matt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 5) HOLY SPIRIT DEFINITION ------------------------------------------------- Jesus gives a good definition for the Holy Spirit, calling Him the HELPER and SPIRITofTRUTH, who will DWELL WITH/IN US, TESTIFY OF WORD OF GOD, TEACH, REMIND and GUIDE US. John 14:17 the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He DWELLS WITH YOU AND BE IN YOU. (1 Cor 3:16) John 14:26 But the HELPER, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will TEACH you all things, and REMIND YOU my teachings John 15:26 But when the HELPER comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will TESTIFY OF ME (1 Cor 12:3) John 16:13 when He, the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, has come, He will GUIDE you into all truth; and He will TELL you things to come 6) HOLY SPIRIT HOW TO RECEIVE --------------------------------------------------- Some believe that not all will be given the Holy Spirit. This is false, all who are worthy Children of God can receive it without measure:- Luke 11:13 If you being evil, know to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him John 3:34 For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. To receive the Holy Spirit we need to HEAR, BELIEVE, REPENT, BAPTIZED, OBEY, PRAY & WAIT:- Acts 1:14/4:24 (They were in one accord). Acts 11:15 as Peter began to SPEAK, the Holy Spirit fell upon them Acts 10:44 the Holy Spirit fell upon all those HEARING the Gospel from Peter Acts 19:2 Paul asked them, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you BELIEVED?' John 7:37 Jesus said, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 39 this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those BELIEVING in Him would receive; (Eph 5:18) Acts 2:38 vs 10:47 Peter said 'REPENT, every one be BAPTIZED for remission of sins; and YOU SHALL receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Acts 5:32 God has given the Holy Spirit to those who OBEY Him. Acts 4:31 they PRAYED, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God boldly 7) HOLY SPIRIT ARRIVAL ------------------------------------------------- Jesus asks his disciples to wait for the Spirit after he rose. We later see how people were filled with the Holy Spirit:- John 20:22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:4 He commanded them to WAIT for the Promise of the Father, 5 you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit 8 you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me all over the earth 8) HOLY SPIRIT SPEAK TO US ------------------------------------------------- Jesus spoke to the desciples thru the Holy Spirit and in many instances directs and stops them as per Gods will:- Acts 1:2 after taken up, He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the chosen apostles Acts 8:29 The Spirit said to Philip, 'Go near and overtake this chariot.' 39 the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, the eunuch saw him no more Acts 10:19 While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit SAID to him, Behold, 3 men are seeking you. 11:12 the Spirit TOLD Peter to go with them, doubting nothing Acts 18:5 Paul was COMPLELLED BY the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. Acts 16:6 they were STOPPED BY the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. 7 they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. Acts 21:4 disciples told Paul THRU the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem. 9) HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THRU US ------------------------------------------------- 2 Samuel 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me,And His word was on my tongue. Matt 10:20 it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. Romans 8:26 the Spirit helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us 10) HOLY SPIRIT MUSNT BE GRIEved ----------------------------------------------------- Jesus himself makes a powerfull statement on blasphemy against the Spirit:- Matt 12:31 'every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32: Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. The Bible says the we must not Grieve or Resist the Holy Spirit else we will be punished:- Ephesians 4:30 do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit Isai 63:10 they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them Ananias & his wife, lied to the Spirit and died immediately, so let us not grieve the Spirit:- Acts 5:3 Peter said, 'Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit 9 test the Spirit of the Lord? 11) HOLY SPIRIT FRUITS ----------------------------------------------------- The presence of the Holy Spirit can be felt by the fruits of a person. Here are the fruits of the Spirit:- Gal 5:22 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Isaiah 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. Eph 5:9 The fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth Below are the bad fruits, of people who do not have the Spirit:- Gal 5:19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God Jude 1:19 These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. 12) HOLY SPIRIT GIFTS ----------------------------------------------------- The bible clearly talks about gifts of the Spirit:- Heb 2:4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? Isa 61:1 / Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me,Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 1 Cor 12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good 8 To one is given the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge 9 to another faith, to another gifts of healing 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
