What is the SIGNIFICANCE OF EXODUS and how is it related to Salvation of the new testament?
The Exodus of the old testament refers to the freedom of the Israelities out of slavery from the Egyptians and is one of the most important event of the old testament. It leads us to the most important concept of Salvation in the new testament. Every stage of Exodus applies to the stages of salvation. The Exodus happened to prepare us for salvation.
Gal 3:24 The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
Moses was sent as an example to prepare people towards Jesus.
Deut 18:18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 19 And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.
Let us look at the different stages in the exodus and see how it applied to our salvation:-
Slavery
Deliverer
Freedom from Bondage
Passover
Destroying the Enemy thru Water
Surviving in the Wilderness
Sin, Death & Mercy
Enduring till the End
SLAVERY:- Exo 1: The Israelites being enslaved in Egypt could represent the sin of their ancestors, the brothers of Joseph who sold their brother and also since they left their home to Egypt which represents wealth and worldliness. Since they sinned agains thim, they were forced to fall into his hands to Egypt. The sin of wickedness gives way to make us fall to the worldliness to which we become slaves. The same way (later) due to the sin of Israel they were given to be ruled by the Romans.
John 8:34 Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
DELIVERER:-Exo 2: Israelites called upon the Lord to save them from slavery to Egyptians and God listened and decided to send Moses to save them from slavery to Egyptians, who had to escape being killed and landed in the hands of the daughter of the King of Egypt. Similarly God decided to send Jesus to save the people from sin and He too had to escape being killed to Egypt and he was born to the line of King David.
FREEDOM FROM BONDAGE:-God sends 9 plagues to Egypt but the Pharoahs heart has been hardened and he rebels aginst God. 9 plages refer to manual efforts of prophets and visible miracles. God sent around 9 prophets to the Israelites but they are still hard at heart. Jesus did around 9 types of visible miracles. People were blessed but not from sin and churse. Finally the 10th plage forces Pharoah to release the Israelities who are protected/saved by the blood of the lamb. The same way after all the prophets came, only thru the blood of the sacrifice of Jesus the first born, we are saved from sin.
Exo 12:3 they shall take to them a Lamb, 5 without blemish 7 strike the blood on the door
1 Pet 1:19 We are were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect
PASSOVER:-
The passover is celebrated to remember the deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery, with breaking of unleavened bread and shedding blood of the first born lamb.
Exo 12:11 it is the LORD's Passover 14/17 for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD -a lasting ordinance 27 It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared them but struck down the Egyptians
This is related to the last supper of Jesus. Here he relates the bread and blood to His flesh and blood as a new covenant.
Mat 26:26 Jesus gave bread, saying, "eat this is my body." 27 he took the cup, saying, "Drink This is my blood of the covenant, for many for the forgiveness of sins.
1 Cor 11:24 Jesus broke bread saying, "eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me" 25 He took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes
John 6:54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life
John 19:14 it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour... 15 they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!"
Mat 26:2 after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.
Mar 14:12 on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?"
DESTROYING THE ENEMY THRU WATER:-
The Egyptians freed the Israelities from slavery. But later they charged against them with full vengence to destroy them totally. The Israelites would be totally delivered only after the enemy is totally destroyed. This happens when they take that step of faith thru the water and the enemy is totally destroyed after that.
The same way the enemy's hold on us is let go when we accept the sacrifice of Christ as a price for our sin. But the enemy will later come after us with full force. We need to take that extra step to destroy the devil totally. When we enter the water in Baptism the enemy gets totally destroyed and we die to our oldness and enter into the newness of spirit and life and are Born again as a new person.
1 Cor 10:2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
SURVIVING IN THE WILDERNESS
The Israelites needed to survive the wilderness with food, water and shelter. Similarly for us to survive in theis evil world, we need spiritual, food, water and shelter. Jesus is the bread of life, source of living water and our shelter.
Exo 23:25 you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you.
1 Cor 10:3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
Bread Exo 16:15 Moses said "This is the bread (manna) which the LORD has given you to eat. Jesus is the bread of life,
John 6:48/58 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world."
Water Exo 15:24, & 17:2-6 God provides water and bread for the Israelites. The water that came out of the Rock of Horeb was from Christ. Jesus is the source of living water.
John 4:10 Jesus said , "If you asked me, and I would give you living water." 13 "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst" 7:37 "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
Shelter Jesus is part of the creation and all things were created thru Him
Heb 3:3 Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.
Sickness Jesus can not only heal us but also give us authority over all sickness.
Num 21:10 Moses made a bronze serpent on a pole; if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
Exo 15:26 I am the Lord that healeth thee.
John 3:14 Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.
Mat 4:23 Jesus went about...healing all kinds of sickness and disease among the people.
Mat 10:1 He gave His 12 disciples power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
Mat 15:30 lame, blind, mute, maimed, and others came; at Jesus' feet, He healed them.
Act 4:30 stretch out Your hand to heal, that signs & wonders may be done thru the name of Jesus
SIN, DEATH AND MERCY
In Exo 32 the people made a calf of gold and worshipped it. This shows that they threw all their wealth for evil in the shape of an animal they were supposed to sacrifice. In v22 Aaron and some others repent for their sin. In v26 Moses gives the people choice to come back to the right side. In 27-28 these who came to the side of Moses were forgiven but the arrogant ones died. But those who are destined for death can be saved thru the blood of Jesus.
Similarly paralytics (Mt 9:2/Lk 5:20), demon possesed (Mt 8:28/9:32/12:22/15:22), epileptic (Mt 17:15), blind (Mt 9:27/20:30/Mk 10:47), lepers (Mt 8:2/Lk 17:12) and prostitutes (Jn 8:2-11/Lk 7:37-48) were forgiven and healed. They had repented, had asked for mercy and had faith in Jesus.
In both cases people repented and asked God for mercy and were forgiven. Jesus prefers Mercy than sacrifice of animals.
Mat 9:13/12:7 "I desire mercy and not sacrifice"
ENDURING TILL THE END
After crossing the sea the Israelites, had to cross the wilderness to get to the destination. The same way when we are saved there is no direct guarantee to Heaven, we need to enter the widerness and overcome hurdles. Even Jesus in Mat 4:1 entered the wilderness just after he was baptized. Only those who endure to the end will be saved, the disobedient will not meet their rest. It is not enough if we are washed by the blood and are baptized, we need to endure with obedience till the end.
UNFORTUNATELY NOT ALL WILL ENDURE TILL THE END TO ENTER THE PROMISE LAND, SOME OF US WILL FALL IN THE WILDERNESS.
Heb 3:17 He was angry forty years with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 they would not enter His rest, who did not obey? 19 because of unbelief. 4:6 because of disobedience 11 Let us be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall due to disobedience
Mat 10:22/24:13 (Only) He who endures to the end shall be saved.
1 Cor 10:1 brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. ...9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
