LUKE 23:46 Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’” Having said this, He breathed His last.
This is the last and 7th verse spoken by Jesus on the cross. 7 is a biblical number that denotes completion. From the first book Genesis (God completed creation on the 7th day) to the last Revelations (Prophecies on 7 churches, Spirits, Candles, Seals, Plagues) and even in between the number 7 has a biblical significance of completion. Jericho fell on the 7th day, after marching 7 times on the 7th day. The sabbath is on the 7th day. Jewish 7 festivals are celebrated for 7 days.
Let us break this verse into parts and meditate on it:-
Jesus cried out ...
The act of crying out is a very loud and painfull plead at a very tragic moment. Jesus was crying out of his pain and also out of eagerness to save mankind from their pain. Jesus made sure he cried out loudly so that many people would hear what he had to say.
...into Your hands I commit My spirit...
Jesus made sure to make it known that he was fullfilling a prophecy in Psalms. However he used only the first part of the prophecy of commiting the spirit.
Psalm 31:5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
He could have redeemed himself. But he did not want to be redeemed but instead wanted God to redeem mankind from sin, curse and death.
John 10:17 I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
John 19:11 Jesus :“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above.
...he breathed his last.
The act of breathing ones last is one of a disgracefull and punishing situation. In Acts 5:5 & 10 Ananias and his wife fall down and breath their last. Jesus breath is last like he was punished because it was not for his wrongs, but he was punished for our wrongs. He did not have to die or breath his last, but he decided to let go of his last breath that we may be saved.
The breath of Jesus is so powerfull that it gave the Holy Spirit which leads to everlasting life.
John 20:22 Jesus breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit...
Conclusion
Jesus suffered for the sins of mankind, yet he committed himself selflessly even in that situation.
1 Pet 2:23 when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;
Similarly let us also commit ourselves to the will of God.
1 Pet 4:19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.
